Ryan Haile a.k.a Conscious was brought into this world with nothing but memories of mumbled sounds and strange faces telling him to breathe. From the slap of the latex glove, he was somewhat considered a little different. With eyes gold like a lion and an umbilical chord rapped around his neck, he was destined to not quite be “all there”. Born to a very nomadic family, Ryan from an early age was exposed to many cultures, and the down falls of uptowns along side the upsides of downtowns. Many faces, and walks of life, trampled in and out of each of his homes. With an extensive background of unfamiliar family faces, all playing some kind of an instrument, he was born with a predestined path.
He spent many years of his life tucked away behind large wooden doors painting fantasy landscapes from the silhouettes left from his hands. He kept to himself, and didn’t speak a word to anyone but his mother and a non-blood related relative. Some would say he was a devil child, others would say he was retarded. Maybe he was the bastard child of both. Seeming to always be off in his world, time would pass and people would follow. Eventually he would find himself airborne traveling to a new destination. This land that awaited him was vast with over sized insects, and what most would consider being the motherland of break dancing.
During this four-year excursion, Ryan was engulfed in a new culture. Aside from not being born there, he soon went from Ryan to Urian. Brazil had adopted him along with his family.
Later down the road, in and out of hobbies and musical tastes, Ryan stumbled upon The Wu-Tang Clan. Next in line was KRS-1. He had short spurts of skanking with the Ska crews, and head banging with the metal heads, but something about hip hop stuck. Later in his years he was exposed to many new sounds, ranging from vinyl diggers soul groups, to artsy folk and their obsessions with Tom Waits. Soon Tom Waits, Sam Cooke, Jim Morrison, Otis Redding, Outkast, Common, The Roots, these names began making Ryan musically. He had a heart for Classic Rock, and loved to chew on the melodies of soul music. He felt nostalgia for Bossa Nova, Samba, and other world music, as well as tipping his hat and rapping with past time partner, Proe.
For four years he was a part in a beginning duo turned trio Duce Company as the alias Omen. Along side Prolific a.k.a. Proe, and Natalie Singley a.k.a. Nat, he contributed to the underground local hip hop group as the deceptive little white kid with complicated lyrics and a voice that didn’t match his profile. Now he is reborn in a sense as Conscious, and is still the deceptive little white kid with a voice that doesn’t match his profile.
